L’Oreal vs. Maybelline Matte Crayon Review

lip-pencil-1Is it just me or are there lip crayons everywhere these days? A couple month ago, on the first week these two lippies hit the shelves, I purchased them with the intention of writing a review for you. But, of course life got in the way so I am going to do it now instead. Because I still don’t see much online about these cuties, I figured I would finally share my humble opinion.

First and foremost, I am talking about the L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte Lipcolour Stick in ‘She’s So Matte’ (top swatch) and the Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur in ‘I Like To Mauve It’ (bottom swatch). I tried to choose the two most similar colors offered from the lines to give an accurate representation.

To start off, The L’Oreal pencil (top) is a glossier formula. Now I know that sounds weird since it has the word ‘Matte’ twice in its name, but it is very smooth. On your lips it almost has a MAC Lustre lipstick feeling, but it looks matte to the naked eye. Since I have dry lips, I appreciate the fact that it doesn’t dry out completely. The only real flaw to this formula is that it is no-where near long lasting. It will fade out within an hour (easily), which is kind of annoying if you are used to the long lasting matte lipsticks. Plus, their mauve/pink shade is more red based than I would like for say a ‘Kylie Jenner lip look’.

Secondly, The Maybelline Color Blur (bottom) is a perfect muted pink, but that is kind of where my love for it ends. The color applies smoothly, but the product itself is thick and almost powdery. It comes in a duel-ended package with the crayon on one side a rubber “smudger” on the other. I think the smudger is kind of gimmicky… I personally don’t know why anyone would use it. The biggest flaw to this lipstick though (in my opinion) is that the product smudges even without the designated tool. Literally five minutes after applying it, it is all over my chin and cupids bow. I can’t explain it because this doesn’t happen to me with any other lippie.

Moral of the story, I like the L’Oreal crayon and I will probably use it up or try the non-matte version. I don’t personally care for the Maybelline version, but that doesn’t mean it wont work for someone else. But, if you actually want a good matte lip crayon, I would highly recommend either the ColourPop Lippie Stix (bargain) or the Bite Beauty Crayons (Splurge). ColourPop (my review here) has a ton of great muted pink and mauve colors including ‘Lumiere’, ‘Frida’ and ‘Brink’. When it comes to Bite, you honestly can’t beat their pencil in ‘Leche’.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Le Matte Lipcolour Stick in ‘She’s So Matte’ $10

Maybelline Lip Studio Color Blur in ‘I Like To Mauve It’ $9

ColourPop Lippie Stix in ‘Lumiere’, ‘Frida’ and ‘Brink’ $5

Bite Beauty Matte Crème Lip Crayon in ‘Leche’ $24
